U.S. manufacturer Apple unveiled four new iPhone models on Tuesday evening German time. In addition to the iPhone 12 in the two sizes 5.4 inches and 6.1 inches, there will be two versions of the iPhone 12 Pro: in 6.1 and 6.7 inches. The devices are to go on sale in two waves: from the 23. October As well as On 13. November.
The central amptions surrounding the new devices have been confirmed during the roughly hour-long Product launch, which was broadcast online as a video stream, largely confirmed. We answer the most important questions about the new iPhone 12 models.
iPhone 12: What different models Apple has announced?
As previously expected, there will be four iPhone 12 models: Two base and two Pro models.
The Base models of the iPhone 12 Will appear in 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch sizes. The smaller version, the iPhone 12 Mini, is thereby the smallest upper-class iPhone so far. Even smaller than the iPhone SE with 4.7 inches, which was released in April.
The Pro models of the iPhone 12 Will come in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes. The larger model is called iPhone 12 Pro Max. It is also the largest iPhone flagship to date. The Pro models are again better equipped, but also more expensive.
For the twelfth iPhone generation Apple offers some new colors on: The 12 and 12 Mini are available in black, white, blue, mint and red. Pro models will be available in blue, silver, gold and graphite.
Price: What will the iPhone 12 models cost??
The prices of the iPhone 12 models are as usual graduated, depending on case size, features and memory size. The entry-level models must again make do with only 64 gigabytes (GB) of internal storage. The most expensive version gets 512GB of flash storage.
iPhone 12 prices at a glance:
- iPhone 12 Mini (5.4 inches): from 778.85 euros (64 GB)
- iPhone 12 (6.1 inches): from 876.30 euros (64 GB)
- iPhone 12 Pro (6.1 inches): from 1.120 euros (128 GB)
- iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7 inches): from 1.217.50 euros (128 GB)
iPhone 12: What will change in the appearance and design of the devices??
Compared to the 11 generation, manufacturer Apple has announced a number of visual and technical innovations for the iPhone 12 models:
The Design Now more similar to the iPad Pro: The previously rounded corners and case frame are now much more angular. The design is reminiscent of the earlier iPhone 5 and SE. The reason for the flat frames is that the antennas for the new 5G reception can be better installed there.
The two less expensive devices will have an aluminum frame. The frame of the Pro models is made of stainless steel.
The display edges are narrower. The camera cutout at the upper edge of the screen (notch) takes up a bit less space. It is also supposed to be four times better protected against drops.
iPhone 12 series: These are the most important technical innovations
Compared to the predecessors, there are a number of technical innovations, but they are limited overall:
All models of the iPhone 12 generation get this time a OLED display. This is supposed to show black and dark areas on the screen better and provide for stronger contrasts. Apple still relied on LC displays in the predecessor, which offered advantages in sunlight.
In terms of the display, Apple – contrary to what some sources had previously speculated – sticks to a Refresh rate from a maximum of 60 hertz. Android models like Samsung's S20 series or the Oneplus 8 Pro already offer a higher refresh rate with 120 hertz. This makes image changes as well as scrolling look smoother and games are supposed to be displayed more smoothly.
Nevertheless, the "XDR Super Retina Display" is sharper than in the predecessor. The pixel density of the iPhone 12 has been increased from 326 to 460 PPI, the brightness to 1200 nits, which is a doubling.
All four models will be the first iPhones to date to have a 5G modem have. Current smartphones from other manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei or Oneplus also already offer 5G connectivity. This allows owners to surf the 5G mobile network, stream videos or games, and upload and download data much faster than the more widespread LTE network.
Corresponding 5G networks In Germany, however, they are almost only available in big cities so far. And here, too, the theoretical maximum speed is not reached. Until now, 5G smartphone tariffs were reserved for customers of Telekom and Vodafone. Since the beginning of October, provider O2 has also opened up the first cities. Rates with 5G option are still quite expensive. Whenever practical, the iPhone uses the LTE network to save battery power.
All new iPhones are equipped with Apple's latest A14 Bionic processor, which also works in the recently introduced iPad Air 4. It is said to be 40 percent faster than the one in the iPhone 11. The battery can now be charged better wirelessly. A magnetic mechanism called MagSafe, which charges the iPhone with 15 watts, is supposed to ensure this. The charger should also align better with the back of the smartphone.
How is the camera of the iPhone 12?
There is again a gradation in the camera: the iPhone 12 base models get two rear cameras. The resolution of the wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle camera is 12 megapixels. The Pro models shoot with three lenses. The additional telephoto camera also has 12 megapixels.
The Pro's camera is said to shoot 87 percent better photos in dark light conditions than its predecessor. Even the non-Pro models, as well as the front camera in all models, now benefit from a night mode. Video quality has also been improved. HDR video recordings in 4K resolution are now possible, which improves the image dynamics.
For the first time, the Pro models also have a so-called "camera module" LiDAR sensor. This was first installed in this year's iPad Pro. LiDAR ("Light Detection and Ranging") is a sensor that uses laser light to measure distances and depths. The smartphone emits laser beams and measures how fast they return from the nearest wall or obstacle.
The LiDAR sensor makes sure the background is nicely out of focus in portrait photos and helps nighttime photos produce better results by bringing objects into focus faster. It can also be used to map the surroundings. Various apps in the range Augmented reality (AR) – i.e. augmented reality – are already using the distance sensor to allow users to place virtual objects in space when looking through the smartphone camera. Games apps also use this.
As for the software: the iPhone 12 models all run Apple's latest operating system, iOS 14, which was released in September.
Important to know: For the first time, Apple doesn't include a separate Power supply more at. Officially for environmental reasons – Apple ames that iPhone 12 buyers own at least one other device from the manufacturer with a matching power supply unit. Above all, however, the measure should save costs when viewed on a mass scale. The same applies to the Earpod headphones that were always included in the past.
When will the iPhone 12 models be released??
Due to the current Corona situation, Apple has rescheduled the sale:
- From the 23. The two 6.1-inch models will go on sale first in October: the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro.
- Not until 13. The iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max will follow in November.
The 6.1-inch models can be ordered as early as November 16. November.
Assessment: For whom is the purchase worthwhile?
If you're an Apple disciple, you probably won't think twice about buying them and will soon make a purchase. Everyone else should consider whether they need the innovations. The Pro models primarily impress with their strong camera with LiDAR sensor. Those who seriously produce photos and videos could benefit from it.
The new 5G reception alone is not a selling point in this country. Network expansion still leaves a lot to be desired and corresponding tariffs are still highly priced. A move to 5G next year should be enough for most. For owners of a previous model, the innovations are limited. If you don't necessarily want the new edge design, you're hardly worse off with the 11 models.
For the coming year, Apple should finally switch to a 120 hertz refresh rate, which could have been expected by now. But only a field test will be able to show whether you notice the difference in practice.
For many interested parties, however, the compact "mini" model with only 5.4 inches could be worth considering. Those who don't want to spend that much can reach for the similarly handy iPhone SE 2020, which was released in April.
Apple only presents one more novelty
Contrary to previous expectations, Apple only announced one other product apart from the new iPhone series: the "Mini" Homepod Mini. Apple's speaker with Siri voice control gets a smaller offshoot. The smart speaker is ball-shaped and has a touch screen on the surface.
It should play music, audiobooks or podcasts with better sound and fit into the smart home. Several models can be combined if desired. The box is said to be thanks to Siri voice assistant be able to distinguish between several voices. Household members can also send voice messages to each other via the Homepad Mini. The device will be released on 16. November. The price in this country is 96.50 euros.
